Home Decor Inspiration

As I spend 90% of my time at home, this is something that's always on my mind. I'm always looking for ways to improve our tiny little home and pinterest is my go-to for home decor inspiration. Would you like to follow me?! Here's my pinterest

I've actually been trying to chill out on the home decorating... or re-decorating because 1) I'm trying to simplify and 2) because I think I'm driving Brandon crazy with all the constant changing.

But... sometimes I just can't help myself. So here's what's been floating around my head in the home decor department.

Plants, boho prints, lots of wood, earthy vibes, some industrial pieces, lots of neutral colors with some color pops here and there.

What have you been pining for when it comes to home decor?

Avocado and White Bean Tacos

I got the recipe from here (plus a few minor changes).
IMG_5636

  • Ingredients:
  • 2 tablespoons cider vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon canola oil
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 cups shredded red cabbage
  • 1 medium carrot, shredded
  • 1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro
  • 1 15-ounce can white beans, rinsed
  • 1 ripe avocado
  • 1/2 cup shredded sharp Cheddar cheese
  • 2 tablespoons minced red onion
  • 4 8- to 10-inch whole-wheat wraps, or tortillas
  • Optional: Sour Cream, wickles

  1. Whisk vinegar, oil, and salt in a medium bowl. Add cabbage, carrot and cilantro; toss to combine.
  2. Put beans in blender (or food processer). Blend until desired consistency. I also added some garlic salt in here.
  3. Mix beans and avocado in another medium bowl and mash with a fork. Stir in onion.
  4. To assemble the wraps, spread about 1/2 cup of the bean-avocado mixture onto a tortilla, some cheese and top with about 2/3 cup of the cabbage-carrot slaw (and if you're like me, some sour cream and wickles!). Try to get your tortilla to close and chow down!!

This was delicious and really easy/fast to put together. I loved the sweet/vinegar-y slaw with the spicy pickles and avocado. The wickles definitely made them for me (: MMmmmmm.

Girlish Garb: Feeding the Ducks

IMG_6438
The other day we decided to swing by our new favorite spot and feed some ducks! We got there RIGHT before dark so I apologize about the dimly lit pictures.

And here are those high waisted shorts again! I pretty much live in these... Well not these particular shorts... just high waisted shorts in general. I was actually supposed to sell this pair but fell in love with them. And so they're mine.

I got the idea to add fabric to them from this youtube video. However, instead of a flag, I just used some retro fabric and did one side of them. And it was pretty darn easy, you could probably do it too! :)

My life lately has consisted of: Homework. And work. Aka a lot of textbook reading, photoshoots, and making clothes. The last two aren't so bad ;) It's the textbook reading that gets me though! And we've been trying to cram every second of our spare time with fun summer activities and trips to see friends (we live so far away from everyone). It's been a great, extremely busy summer so far and I'm excited for what we've got planned next!

Oh and speaking of work, I've been working on new patterns for clothes and am really excited about that as well! I'll exaggerate more on that once I've got enough to share but they're going to be good. I've been trying to figure out what kind of clothes I find myself wearing and really working on fit/comfort. I don't want to bash my last "dress design" but this time I'm trying to step out of the box a little more, learn some new techniques, and work on things that are a little bit harder/more unique than a basic slip over dress. It's taken a lot of trial and error but I think I've come up with some pretty cool stuff! I've never taken any pattern making classes so it's been a slow process but it is so gratifying to see how I've progressed and actually making something that turns out exactly how I meant it to be (and sometimes even better!). Kind of like art? It's a skill for sure and it involves a lot more math/thinking than I ever expected sewing to be. Crazy how things can work out like that.

Anyways, have you entered the giveaway yet?!

Island Photoshoot Part 2 and more!

Hey folks, here's the second part of the photo shoot! I decided to put it in a "lookbook", you like? You can also see all of the pictures separately on my store's Facebook page... and "like" my page if you feel like it ;)

But wait, there's mooooore! I'm having a SUMMER SALE (I wish I could make this light up!) to save up for a road trip! You can get 30% off with the code: SUMMERVACA

And last, a GIVEAWAY! Woohooo! Enter to win a $30 gift certificate to Sam Wish. All you have to do is comment on this post with an answer to the question below (one entry only please!). If it won't let you comment, you can email me at samwish3@gmail.com

QUESTION: Which site do you prefer, Etsy (samwish3.etsy.com) or the Sam Wish storefront (samwishstore.com).

If you're not aware of my storefront, it's integrated with Etsy, it just gives me my own domain and is a little more customizeable. When you "check out", it takes you back to Etsy.

I'm debating whether it's worth it to keep the storefront and I want to know what you guys think!! Plus, you can when some goodies in the process (:

**Giveaway will end on the July 19th! Good luck!**

Island Photoshoot: Part 1

The last 2 months have been filled with lots of fun photo shoots! On this one, Brandon, my brother, my friend Blaire, and I all crammed into our car and drove to Galveston Island. It was probably the most fun I've ever had on a photoshoot and I'm pretty stoked about the results. It was funny because we were all in the photoshoot so we all took turns with my digital camera and the 2 film cameras we brought along. And we used my 50 mm lens for the first time (in a photo shoot that is) so they've got that extra umph!!

I will be putting up some men's clothes in the store soon (which is why Brandon and my brother are in these) so keep an eye out!

This was the best weekend. I actually ended up working all weekend but got to do all the fun parts like making things and doing photo shoots. I've been stuck lately doing the not so fun parts of my business so it was really nice to have all weekend to be creative and just enjoy it. This is also why I changed the whole picture thing on my store, so that I can spend more time creating and less on photographing/listing.

Mingle Monday: Tigerlilly Quinn

Mingle Monday again! Today we have Fritha from Tigerlilly Quinn!!

***************************************************************************

family3_effected

1.       What got you into blogging and how long have you been at it?
I started my blog as a way to showcase my illustrations about two and a half years ago now.My boyfriend had convinced me to leave a job I hated and was supporting me whilst I looked for one I could stand! In this time (as well as applying for jobs) I got the chance to start up this blog and get back into my artwork. Since then it slowely became a lifestyle blog as more and more posts about our days crept in, now it features a lot of my six month old so you could say its more of a 'mummy blog' but its interesting how it has evolved!

IMG_5672.JPG_effected

 2.       What does blogging mean to you? Business or pleasure?
Originally it was business, a way to get my name and work out there, now it is pleasure, I blog daily and if I dont I really miss it! Its a huge part of my life now

3.       What do you mostly blog about?
I blog illustrations, what I wore posts, recipes, photos of our family life

IMG_5351.JPG_effected-001

4.       What do you besides blogging? What’s a normal day like in the life of Fritha?
My days mostly involve playing with my son Wilfryd! Now he is getting a little older and able to amuse himself for longer periods of time I am able to also enjoy creating. I will usually work a little on whatever commision I have going at the time, look up fun things to make for us to eat as a family or go for coffee with friends!

 5.       Do you plan out your posts or just kind of wing it? Strict schedule blogger or go with the flow blogger?
certainly more of a 'go with the flow' type of person, although I do have a few regular features such as 'what I wore' posts and 'our weekend in pictures'

IMG_4781

6.       Are you a daytime blogger or night owl blogger?
A daytime one for sure, I blog in the morning when Wilf is having a nap, I have always been a morning person and you will rarely see me awake past 10pm these days!

7.       Name a few of your favorite blogs and why?
I love Che and Fidel, the photography and her way of life is inspiring to me. - http://cheandfidel.blogspot.co.uk/
I love Sarah Illustrator for her illustrations and family pictures - http://sarahillustrator.blogspot.co.uk/
I love Secondhand Sundays for her cute pictures of married life! http://secondhandsundays.blogspot.co.uk/

An example of a 'what mama wore' post - http://tigerlillyquinn.blogspot.co.uk/2012/07/what-mama-wore.html

Enchilada Casserole

I can't remember if I told you guys but last week we decided to go vegetarian. And it was amazing. We had the best food (possibly the best we've ever made) all week long. Plus, I've been trying to make everything from scratch to eliminate those nasty processed foods so it's been even better! This meal was one of the last things I made and it's been on my mind ever since. (I may be cooking something similar tonight!!) It was SO good. But I think the best part was the homemade enchilada sauce, to DIE FOR.
IMG_6022
Anyways, enough of my rambling! Here's the recipe:

Enchilada sauce
3-4 tbsp vegetable oil
2 tbs chopped onion
15 oz can of tomato sauce
½ cup water
4 tbs chili powder
2 tbs flour
1 tsp cumin
1 tsp garlic salt
1 tsp oregano
1 tsp cocoa powder
¼  tsp cayenne pepper

1.        Saute onions in vegetable oil until soft.
2.        Mix in flour and cook for about 5 minutes. (it should be a little runnier than a paste, if it’s too thick, add more oil)
3.        Combine rest of dry ingredients in small bowl.
4.        Add tomato sauce to flour/onion/oil.
5.        Add dry ingredients, whisk until well blended.
6.        Cook for about 5 more minutes.
7.        I also added the beans to this after I turned the heat off. But you can put this in the casserole mix if you’d like.

Casserole
1 (15 oz.) can black beans, drained and rinsed (or 1½ cups cooked black beans)
1 can of corn
4 serrano chilis
5 tomatoes
 8-10 flour (or corn) tortillas
1 onion (yellow or purple)
1 green bell pepper.
3-4 green onions
½ tbsp oregano
2-3 cups monterrey jack cheese
1-2 avocados (optional)

1.        Boil a medium pot of water. Place in tomatoes and cook for about 1 minute or until skins split. Take out with slotted spoon and place in ice bath.
2.        Smash tomatoes with potato masher
3.        Stick chili’s in the oven on broil for about 3 minutes or until the tops turn brown. Flip and cook another couple of minutes until the top turns brown again. Take out and place in ice bath. Once they cool, peel off skin and dice them up.
4.        Chop up your onion and bell pepper.
5.        Saute in vegetable oil until soft.
6.        Add mashed tomatoes, corn, green onions, and oregano. You can also add in the chilis here but I left them out so I could make half the dish without them for Eliza. Cook for about 5-10 more minutes.
7.        Remove from heat.
8.       Grab your tortillas and slice them in half. I then heated them up a little in a saucepan with a little oil. Only about 30 seconds on each side.
9.        Now you start layering in a 13 x 9 glass dish. It doesn’t really matter what order you do it in but the last layer definitely needs to be enchilada sauce topped with a little cheese. And then if you’d like, dice up some avocado and put on top for the last 10 minutes of baking.
10.   For the layering, I suggest half casserole mix, 4 tortillas, half of enchilada sauce, cheese, other half of casserole mix, chilies, 4 tortillas, other half of enchilada sauce, cheese, avocado. Mine was kind of wonky, I’ll definitely use this layering next time.
11.      And bake at 350 for about 20 minutes.

A few suggestions: Add more water to the sauce to make it a little thinner. Also, next time I think I’ll use some more tomatoes and bell peppers (maybe orange and red?) to give it a little more fluff (I won’t be using beans next time, no matter how hard I try I just do not like beans). Also, you can add some cilantro and black olives! I actually bought both of those but forgot to add them! Woops!

IMG_6026

I'm sorry if the pictures don't look so neat. I kind of already dug in before I remembered to take a picture!

So today we went to the beach and the funniest thing happened! When we got there, we picked out a spot, laid out a blanket with all of our stuff and ran for the water. About an hour later, Brandon, Eliza, and I were building sand castles on shore when my sister walked in from the water and screamed, "Do you guys not see all those birds by our stuff?!" I turned around and there were about 30 sea gulls hovering around our blanket. I hopped up and ran behind my sister back to our spot. Apparently we had left a bag of chips sitting out and they had PECKED their way THROUGH the bag and were eating our chips!! Isn't that insane?! And there were so many. I just remember looking back and it was like a cloud of sea gulls above our stuff and then they just scattered when we started running towards them. We were lucky that none of them pooped on our stuff, I'm so grateful for that! But it was the craziest thing.

Well, I'm off to go make some yummy food. And I will definitely be incorporating this enchilada sauce because I'm craving it now. Hope you guys enjoy your weekend! Ta ta!
