Girlish Garb: Thin Stripes

Here is a few outfit pics that I did a while back for Kitty Snooks. They were taken in my studio right next to wear I take actual product pictures. If you look at the very bottom left corner, you can see what used to be my old store background :)

Mingle Monday: Run 2 the Wild

Happy Monday guys! Please welcome the lovely lady behind Run 2 the Wild!!

1.       What got you into blogging and how long have you been at it?
I have been blogging almost 6 months now... I know... I am a little new at this but I really love it. I started blogging because I feel like I am at the point in my life where everything is just beginning for me and I wanted to record it. I graduated with a bachelors degree in Art Education in May of 2011 so I feel like I now have the free time to get back into the things I have always loved. One of those is journaling and blogging has become a wonderful way for me to fill that need.
DSC_0980-001
2.       What does blogging mean to you? Business or pleasure?
I like to say that blogging is both because my little business is my life but also my passion and therefore what makes me happy. So it's kind of a good healthy mix. I have a little shop on Etsy called Run 2 the Wild and I use my blog not to promote but rather to show the behind the scenes of what makes it tick and the inspiration that drives it.
DSC_0299
3.       What do you mostly blog about?
My blog contains a lot of inspiration, journals of my life and a bit of DIY. I am very visual person so you will see a lot of photos... my camera stays glued to my hip. I mostly journal about the mini adventures I take around Kentucky where I live.
DSC_0168-001
4.       What do you do besides blogging? What’s a normal day like in the life of Little Red Feather?
A normal day for me usually comes in the form of thrifting, taking lots of pictures, collecting moss and specimens outside, loving my new husky pup, creating things and dealing with my online shop. I also spend a lot of my time working with kids after school and in the summer during camps. If I am feeling a little crazy I like to go out and get a few drinks with friends.
Some of my favorite things to do on a lazy day is lay around with a glass of wine watching Netflix or relaxing in my hammock which is usually where I spend 50% of my summer.

5.       Do you plan out your posts or just kind of wing it? Strict schedule blogger or go with the flow blogger?
I have planned a few posts... things like my DIY but my journals are me totally winging it. One thing I always want is to stay true to who I am as a blogger even if my posts come up looking like I had the worst day ever. I want to connect with my readers not just entertain and for me being real is a way for my readers to see who I am and relate to that.
DSC_0827-003
6.       Are you a daytime blogger or night owl blogger?
I am sporadic. You might find me posting at 6 am or sometimes  10 pm or anytime I feel like I need to release. I am a bit of a mess when it comes to being organized and doing things at certain times... maybe I will get better at that one day ;)
7.       Name a few of your favorite blogs and why?
http://rootstransplanted.blogspot.com/ a wonderful blog friend of mine who is a marine scientist living in Puerto Rico. Her posts are full of beautiful pictures and interesting thoughts.
http://www.trashtocouture.com/ This blog is a simple as it gets with lots of pictures. Basically this blog shows a transformation of vintage clothing into new one of a kind fun pieces.
http://meganmakescute.blogspot.com/ I love how this girl keeps it real and raw. Her blog is full of indie inspired DIY.

P.S. Thanks Sam for having me! I feel so special to be guest blogging on My Latest Obsession!

No problem girl ;)

So how was your weekend? I got some much needed relaxation time, mostly due to all the rain we got. I love rain.

Anyways, I can't believe 4th of July is in two days! Totally snuck up on me this year....

Link Love

I've been tinkering with the layout a little bit and changed it around. I can't quite find what I'm looking for but it's going to stay like this until I do.... Anyways.

Here's a few random tidbits before I go to bed! First some link love for a few blogs I've been loving, new and old. No specific order.

Snakes Nest- This gal is so pretty and is also a young mother.
The Bohemian Collective- So inspiring.
The Road is Home- Most gorgeous photography ever and a new mamma!

Here's the most amazing yoga video you will ever watch. I've been doing yoga non-stop since this. Someday, this will be me (:

Also, funny thing. Here's a link to my first post, oi!
An awesomely amazing lookbook (if you haven't seen it already)- Wildfox Romeo and Juliet Survive!

And a conversation between Eliza and I:

Eliza: Mommy, when I was your age I wanted to be a good cooker
Me: Oh ya?
Eliza: But my pappa said to me, you can't cook when you're little

Goodnight everyone, hope your weekend was swell. See you bright and early Monday morning!

Taco Soup- Healthified (+ easy version)

Last week, I started craving some taco soup. But since we've been trying to eat less meat, I decided to take that out of the meal completely. And then, while I was at it, try to substitute the processed food with more fresh food! So here's the healthified version of my taco soup (skip to bottom for the easy version)

IMG_5036

Ingredients:

6 Roma tomatoes
1 Red Onion (chopped)
2-3 Cloves of Garlic (chopped)
4 Peppers (I think these were serrano?)
1 Orange or Red Bell Pepper (chopped)
24 oz. Organic Tomato Puree
1 Can of Corn (because I have lots of canned corn to use up)
1 Package of Taco Seasoning
Frito Chips
Monterrey Jack Cheese

IMG_4984 copy
1. Boil a large pot of water with a large bowl of ice water ready. Once the water is boiling, dump in the tomatoes (whole) for about 1 minute or until they begin to peel.
IMG_4989
2. Remove with slotted spoon and put in ice bath.

IMG_4991
3. When the tomatoes have cooled, remove the peel, and squeeze out the seeds.  IMG_4997
4. Chop up the tomatoes and then put them in a bowl. Then mash with a potato masher.
IMG_5001
5. Saute your garlic, onion, and bell pepper in some butter until soft.  IMG_4995 IMG_4999 IMG_5005 IMG_5009
6. Add tomato mixture. Let simmer for about 5 minutes.
IMG_5011
7. Add tomato puree. Let simmer for about 10 minutes.  IMG_5006
8. While that's simmering, we're going to cook up our peppers! So put them on a baking sheet and set your oven to broil. Let broil for about 3-6 minutes, checking on the peppers to see when the skin starts to turn brown. Prepare an ice bath. Once the top is brown, flip over so the under side can cook a little too.  IMG_5012 IMG_5019
9. When those are done, take them out and drop in ice bath. IMG_5022
10. Once they've cooled, dice them up and add to soup! IMG_5024
11. I let my soup simmer for about 30 minutes.  IMG_5027
12. And then add your can of corn (drained, of course) as well as your taco seasoning. IMG_5030 copy
13. Let simmer for another 20 minutes and serve with frito chips and monterrey jack!  IMG_5034

Mmmmm, mmmm gooood!

Next time I want to try to make my own taco seasoning, corn, and tomato puree. Then, it will really be from scratch! Now all I have to do is find a healthier alternative to Fritos...... ideas?

__________________________________________________________________________________________

Easy Version:

3 Garlic cloves
1 bell pepper (any color, I used red)
1/2 Onion
about 2 tbs olive oil
24 oz. jar Tomato sauce/puree
small can Diced green chiles
1 cans Black beans
2 cups of frozen corn
14 oz can Crushed tomatoes
2 tbs Handmade Taco Seasoning
Monterrey jack cheese
Pita chips (great, healthy alternative to fritos!)

1. Saute the onion and bell pepper in the olive oil. Once soft, throw in minced garlic.
2. Add in the corn and a tbs of taco seasoning, saute for another few minutes.
3. Add in the tomato sauce, crushed tomatoes, green chiles, corn, and black beans. Reduce heat and let simmer for 20-30 minutes until it thickens a little bit.
4. Serve topped with cheese and pita chips!

Girlish Garb: Jeans and New Store Background.... Again

So yes, I have a new store background. Again. I went even simpler with all white this time as well as changing the way I take pictures of clothes! But we'll get to that in a minute.

These were taken a few days ago. I was trying to find something to wear and got the sudden urge to wear jeans! And let me tell you, this almost NEVER happens. I've been very into skirts/dresses/shorts lately, especially because of the heat. So this was kind of a big deal ;)

So back to the store! First of all, I wanted an easier way of listing clothes. So this is the new first step. I'll be taking pictures of the clothes on hangers and then hopefully this will give me more time to do fun photoshoots which I will add to the listings so that people can see how they fit on a person.

Kind of the concept is that whenever you take clothes out of your closet, first you look at it on the hanger, and then you try it on. So on my site, first you will see the clothes on the hanger, and then pictures of them on people, styled with other clothing. This also simplifies the first picture you see instead of already putting it in an outfit, it gives you a chance to see it alone and create outfits in your head first!

A Few Things: Body Love

I know my first couple of "A Few Things" posts were kind of downers. Sorry about that! But this one is positive (:  So here we go!

IMG_4176 copy
I'm sure all of you can relate but as far back as I can remember, I've been self-conscious about my body. That's really sad to say but it's totally true. I am not overweight but I am not perfect either. And especially now, after having a baby, I'm especially self-conscious. But lately, I've been learning a lot about taking care of my body through the products I choose to put in/on my body and just taking better care of myself in general. I'm learning to appreciate the fact that I even have a body, a healthy body, one that works pretty darn well most of the time and I really haven't been taking very good care of it. It's something that I think a lot of people take for granted.

IMG_4183 copy
This is something I've felt really passionate about lately, partly because I want to learn for myself to better my life but also to learn so that I can pass it on to Eliza so that she can be as healthy (body and mind) as possible.

I've been reflecting on why I am so self-conscious and how I came to be that way so I can take steps to change it. And I wanted to share a few things I've learned and that help me.

Clothes:
Now, I love clothes. That's what I do for a living. As I've been learning to simplify my life and attempting to become less materialistic, it's been hard to justify "fashion". Although, I don't really believe in fashion. I don't like what I think of when I think of fashion. I like clothes and style and dressing up. But when I think of fashion I think of anorexic models, name brands, and highly inflated prices. Sad. So I really don't like that word. Because when I think of what I do, what I enjoy, and how I look at "clothes", I think of creativity. Art. My body. I love putting an outfit together, how a shirt can change a whole outfit. I dress for my mood, however I'm feeling be it colorful & playful or neutral and down to earth. I dress in comfortable clothes. I dress in a way that makes me feel pretty. I dress for my body type, in a way that makes me feel good about my body. And I've noticed lately that when I look in the mirror, I don't think "ugh, this makes me look fat". And that is a really good feeling. When I dress, I dress to feel good about myself and to be comfortable. Period. I don't try to squeeze into things that don't fit me because I know I'll just be uncomfortable and worrying about how I look the whole day. So I guess my point is that I use clothes to decorate this beautiful body of mine not to make my body something that it's not.

IMG_4237 copy
Ah, this man of mine. He's so cute :)

No clothes:
As much as I love clothes, sometimes I just don't feel like wearing clothes, darnit! And that's perfectly fine. Sometimes, it's just too dang hot to wear clothes anyways. Now, that doesn't mean that I walk around naked all the time (I'm not that brave yet). Usually it's just me in my house wearing a sports bra and some comfy undies (to much information?). But I feel like this has had a big part in me loving my body more. Whenever I pass by a mirror, hey, I look at myself. Who doesn't? But since I'm walking around half naked all the time, I've gotten used to it and don't point out every single imperfection of my naked body every time I look in the mirror. And that's also a really good feeling too. There are those occasions when I stop at the mirror for a little too long and start to think bad thoughts but I just try to stop myself and be appreciative. Because it's so easy to narrow in on those stretch marks on my tum-tum but instead, I try look at my body as a whole and appreciate it for what it is. Loving the way you look is a freakin' hard thing. Go naked and enjoy it! This is also a great way to get motivated about treating your body better (i.e. eating well... and working out which I need to do...). I apologize if I sound like a nudist. But sometimes I just like being el natural, ok?! .... I'm really not a nudist.

IMG_4419 colorcopy

Food:
Ok, I love my body. I love doing all the things my body allows me to do. But to do those things, I need to fuel myself with good food to allow myself to do them! I don't want to eat vegetables grown with chemicals. I don't want to eat processed foods that'll just make me feel sick. I want to be energetic! I want to be able to play with my daughter, I want my daughter to be healthy! It's as simple as that. Eat healthy and your body will feel good and look good and make you feel better about yourself. This is something we've been working on a lot lately. We went vegetarian this week and I am pleasantly surprised. We've had the best food we've possibly ever made and non of it involved meat! And when I think of meals with meat, the meat is really not even the best part. It's certainly not the healthiest part so why? We're also looking into a local csa to start getting local/organic fruits and veggies. It's kind of fun, I feel so much more connected to the food I buy rather than buying a box of god knows what and following the directions to make our meals. It's very humbling, learning to cook food from scratch. It makes you appreciate where your food comes from and the effort that goes into growing food. And a long with that, we've started a little garden! We can't grow much right now but we've got some tomato plants, some peppers, a few herbs, and lettuce! I hope that someday we can have a steady stream of lettuce so we never have to buy that again. Wouldn't that be cool? Just picking your lettuce everyday for a *fresh* salad?

Oh, also the pictures are from an "engagement" shoot Brandon and I did. I thought it was kind of appropriate. I've been wanting to take some couple pictures for a while but couldn't decide on a theme. What to wear? What location? And then I just decided to take all of that out of the equation and just do it in our home, with no clothes. (tmi again?) I wanted them to be... raw, simple, natural. Just Brandon and I cuddling in our bed. (nothing sexual, guys). It's just the most comfy and sacred place in our house. Where we all lay down to sleep (Eliza too!). Where we spend family time, playing. And to take clothes out of it was just kind of obvious. Because I didn't want them taking away from the main purpose of the pictures. Us. So that's that. And then I went a little crazy in photoshop.... It's whatever ;)

Anyways, enough of my rambling.... I hope this isn't too weird. I feel like I'm starting to get crazier and crazier. I'm sure my family thinks I'm wacko but to me it's just becoming more normal. The way earth intended it. The world's a crazy place, ya know?
