DIY: Floral Headbands Round Two!

You probably all know how obsessed I am with flower headbands. You can see my first tutorial here that uses a string of ribbon which you can also replace with stretchy lace ribbon

This tutorial however was inspired by one of my new favorite fashion bloggers, Snake's Nest, and this cool headband on Etsy. And I must say that I am in love. I haven't had a chance to wear any yet but I feel like these are going to get a lot of use this summer!

What you need:

This wrapped wire stuff (found in the floral dept.)
Some hot glue
Fake flowers
And some pliers with wire cutters on them (not shown in the picture, sorry)

I was learning as I went and found better techniques towards the end so I'm sorry if the pictures aren't of one specific headband! Just bear with me.

IMG_1930
First, you need to take all the flowers off the stem and if they have a plastic piece sticking out the bottom, cut it off.
IMG_1945 copy
Next, cut a piece of wire that fits perfectly on your head. Not too tight, you just want it to rest on your head. Glue the ends like in the picture.
IMG_1961 copy
Next, cut a second piece just a little shorter than the first and kind of wrap it like in the picture. What I found works best is to start a few inches from the back, wrap an end and then weave it behind and in front of the base. Then when you get to the other side, wrap it in kind of the same spot and cut off the excess. And the trick is, to make it have these humps so it's easier to glue the flowers in the gaps (just makes them a little more stable). You might just have to experiment with that part.
IMG_1977 IMG_1978 copy
And then just glue the flowers on! This one, I didn't make large humps and it was a bit harder to get the flowers to stick.... learn from my mistakes!
IMG_1975 copy IMG_1969 copy
And another thing you can do is wrap the parts where the two wires combine in ribbon, to avoid any head-poking.

And one more thing, with these type of flowers I found that it's best to fold it, squeeze a little glue on the tip and stick them on!

Like this.

And here are the finished results!!! What do you think?!

I'm pretty excited about all of these (:

Over the weekend, the Grandma's took Eliza off our hands and we spent most of our time exploring our town! Friday, we ventured to downtown Houston and spent the day driving around in the rain scouting out locations for a future photo shoot. Then on Saturday we went the opposite direction and explored Galveston Island. It was a pretty chill weekend in all and it was nice to enjoy places near us instead of just wishing we could travel somewhere else. I'll have to post some pictures later.

Finals are coming up as well as a bunch of other important events so it was nice to have a little break before things get crazy again. I am very happy to have my baby back though, we missed her a whole bunch!

In other news, my birthday is in two days!!! WAhooo! And I think we might be celebrating in Austin this weekend.... eeeeee!

Mingle Monday: Sherri Amour

Hope you guys had a wonderful weekend (I know I did). Today, we have a little Mingle Monday post from a lovely gal named Sherri, enjoy!

********************************************************************************

Ahoy! I'm Sherri and I blog over here. I'm excited to be here! Here's a lil Q and A to get to know me better  and a few of my outfits from my personal style blog.
1. What got you into blogging and how long have you been at it?
I was always into fashion and I recently discovered fashion blogs. I came across a modest fashion blogger and I said to myself that representing modesty and style is a good reason to start one. I started mine last summer.

2. What does blogging mean to you? Business or pleasure?
Blogging for me is a creative outlet and a way to get all of my inspiration in one place that I can preserve it and share it with others. I think the business side of it I'll probably tap into soon because I want to open an online shop {which I'm pretty excited about}.
3. What do you mostly blog about?
I mostly blog about fashion inspiration, how to dress conservatively without looking frumpy, and bits and pieces journaling.

4. What do you besides blogging? What’s a normal day like in the life of _____?
Besides blogging, I like to spend time with family and friends, workin and workin out, and a lot of time devoted to church activities and functions.

5. Do you plan out your posts or just kind of wing it? Strict schedule blogger or go with the flow blogger?
I generally like to plan out and schedule my posts because I find it easier to manage and it keeps me from getting too wrapped up in the blog world. heh
 6. Are you a daytime blogger or night owl blogger?
Anytime...but I guess you could say daytime.

7. Name a few of your favorite blogs and why?
Ooh...this is a toughy because there are soo many. But a few of my favs are:
Tomboy Style...for the inspiration and vintage photos
a fine day for sailing...for her vintage style and sense of humor
The Sartorialist...because I'm in love with streetstyle and he's genius
a cup of jo...she always has interesting posts and has the best taste in everything

Thanks so much Sherri for sharing (:

DIY: Feather Necklace

This is probably the easiest feather necklace ever. All you need is a feather, some chain, and metal wire. Oh and some little pliers that have wire cutters on them. The glue sticks are there because I thought I was going to glue it but didn't sooo ignore those!

IMG_1899 copy
All you do is cut yourself about 8" of wire and starting towards the bottom where the feathers start, wrap upwards. The leave about half an inch sticking out at the top.
IMG_1904 IMG_1911
Then, I made a little loop and tucked in the rest of the wire (make sure it's not poking out so we don't stab anyone!)
IMG_1914
And last, I just attached it to a link on my chain!
IMG_1918

I made mine long so I didn't need one of those clippy things but you can add one of those if you'd like!

Girlish Garb: Boho Chic

All this summery weather has really got me in the boho kind of mood! And I just realized this but the past.... 6 months? I've gone through an extremely girly phase.... I really don't consider myself to be that girly of a gal, I'm pretty low maintenance as far as girls go. That being said, I've definitely been in touch with my feminine side lately! Butttt this summer weather is changing it all! I've gone a little stud crazy the past 48 hours (it's a little scary) which is definitely a new thing for me For example, these shorts! I studded and ripped them up (with a razor blade) a few days ago. Here's a video that inspired me: here

Also, this shirt I made out of a bed sheet! Can you tell? I'm working on some summery clothes designs and thissss tank/crop top is one of them!

(sorry there are so many pictures, I couldn't choose!)
IMG_1893 copy IMG_1874

One more note. I've never been one to let my mid-driff hang out, mostly because I'm very self-conscious (probably like every other girl out there) but I've gotten extra brave lately and figure I might as well flaunt it while I still can! So this is me trying to be un-self-conscious.

I was experimenting with taking pictures in the sun yesterday with my new 50 mm! It was interesting and I definitely learned some things not to do. Next time, I'll bring sunglasses. But I think it was pretty successful and am quite pleased with how these turned out. (: What do you think?

Cheesy Chicken & Avocado Casserole

IMG_1437 copy
GUYS, this was so good. I've been craving a good stuffed avocado recently but have not been able to track one down in my town. So I took a leap and attempted to make my own version! I thought about this for a long time and finally decided to make a sort of casserole. It didn't turn out quite as.... tex-mex as I'd like it but it was still freakin' delicious! I have a few things in mind to change for the next go around but that's for another post. Here's what I did:

Ingredients:
3 Avocados
1 lb boneless skinless chicken breast
Cheese- I used this a mexican blend
Half an onion
Cream or half & half
A dollop of sour cream
Bread crumbs
A few tablespoons of butter

IMG_1412 copy
Throughly cook chicken. I like to create a pocket with aluminum foil and bake at 350 for 45 minutes. Before baking, you can season it like I did with some salt, pepper, and possibly cayenne pepper.
IMG_1415
Shred with two forks...
IMG_1416
And stir in the cheese, I ended up using this whole 8 oz. packet
IMG_1418
Chop up your onion and sautte with some butter or oil (I don't remember what I used)
IMG_1419
While you're waiting for those to cook a little, slice up your avocados and create a layer of them in whatever baking dish you plan to use.
IMG_1420 copy
(these aren't perfect but whatev)
IMG_1424
After your onions have become a bit translucent (and not as brown as mine!) add in a little cream or half and half. I used half and half so I put quite a bit in. This can be optional though and you could probably do without.
IMG_1421
Then toss in your chicken mixture.
IMG_1422
I also added a large scoop of sour cream. You could even use cream cheese?
IMG_1426
Stir that around until the cheese just starts to melt. Scoop that into your baking dish on top of the avocados.
IMG_1427
I probably used about a cup of bread crumbs and 3-4 tablespoons of butter. Cut the butter into the bread crumbs and evenly spread that on top of the chicken mixture.
IMG_1431
I cooked this at probably 375 for about 20 minutes (or until the bread crumbs start to brown). I actually tried to put the broiler on the last 5 minutes and burnt the top! I was able to scrape off the top layer though and it was fine..... so don't do that.
IMG_1433
And serve while hot!
IMG_1438

Looking at these pictures is making my mouth water. I can't WAIT to make this again. I wonder if cream cheese instead of sour cream would be better? I suppose I'll have to find out! Also, this does not make good left overs because avocado doesn't save well.... so eat it all the first night! (shouldn't be a problem)
