DIY Shoebox Dollhouse

One day last week it was raining so Eliza and I decided to make something! I remember seeing these cute little dolls over at Cakies and wanted to make some of our own. And of course, if you make some dolls, you gotta make a dollhouse! I may have gone a little overboard.... but it sure did turn out cute.

I couldn't find the wooden dolls so I had to get creative and make some of my own! We used wooden egg things and round pieces with a hole in the middle. And glue those babies together!

Next, I butchered a shoebox and made my house.

I got a bunch of scrapbook paper to use as "wallpaper". Oh, and I added a door.

This is supposed to be a light, can you tell?

IMG_0766
Sparkly paper for the roof (yes, please?!!!) and this little metal frame to finish it off.

Then, with the left over cardboard, I made some cute little beds.

Which I lined with foam and made little guards to keep the dolls in place.

Last, I added some trimming to the room and some felt bedding for the dolls. Oh and some cute "frames" from leftover paper.

I was going to take some pretty pictures with it like outside but Eliza kind of messed it up the next day. I'm glad I got these though! If it lasts through another week or so, maybe I'll do the outside.... but that's doubtful.

Ha, and this is my messy workstation (aka the kitchen table). I spent about $20 on this project but could definitely have spent less. I tend to go all out and ending up spending like 2 hours making this dang thing. It's still intact (for the most part) but I think next time, I'll save my energy and money and go with something simpler. Regardless, I enjoyed making something for Eliza. Besides the quilt and a few other little things, I haven't really made a whole lot for Eliza. I have been holding off on making clothes because I didn't want to make her something she'd grow out of so fast. Plus we have sooo many hand-me-downs that we don't need any more clothes. This project was really fun and it just made me happy the whole time thinking of how much fun she would have with it. And I think she really likes it so that makes it all worth while!

DIY Crayon Art

I'm sure you guys have seen this before, it's all over Pinterest. I thought it would be a fun project for Eliza and I so we did it! Here's a tutorial in pictures:

I used an 8 x 10 canvas (I think?). A box of 24 crayons, a box of 16 crayons, a glue gun (and glue) and a hairdryer.

First, you need to line up your crayons in the pattern you'd like them to be. Then glue them in place.

Then, I propped it up in my sink in case it got messy (I later put some paper towels under it to catch any spills).

Then, get to hairdrying! First, it will get kinda oily, then slowly start to drip.

And done! I was going to wait to show you where I put it up but I haven't quite finished decorating that part of the wall sooooo that'll have to wait. Hope you guys are having a good weekend! Today, I'm playing catch up with work and crafts. I'm attempting to make my own pattern for some boots/mukluks/moccasin boot things. We'll see how that goes.

DIY Table Cloth to Rug

So, I did this a while ago (atleast a month) but wasn't too sure about the outcome. But whatever! I'm just going to put it up. It's been in my house for a while and I think I kinda like it, even though it didn't quite come out the way I wanted. Anyways, I bought this table cloth (not knowing what it was) and used it as a rug but Eliza kept using it as a blanket (and still does). So one day, my mother came over and was like, "Is that a tablecloth?" and I replied, "Ohhhh my gosh! Hahah, it totally is a tablecloth!". She gave me the idea of using a canvas dropcloth as a backing to make it a little more stiff so that's what I did!

Here's what it looked like to begin with (ignore the mess)

IMG_8294
I decided to tye-dye it so I wrapped some rubber bands around it.

IMG_8297
Put it in the bathtub, and wet it.

IMG_8302
Then, I boiled some water and mixed in my dye (note- I used really cheap dye and it turned out crappy, I suggest RIT dye)

Also, avoid spilling, like I did.

IMG_8310
Then, I applied the dye mixture.

While that was sitting, I cut out my dropcloth. I measured the diameter of my rug.

IMG_8316
Folded my drop cloth in half, and then in half once more.

IMG_8321
Then I placed my yardstick edge at the corner (which will be the center of my circle) and measured the radius. Cut using the radius measurement all the way around until you have a quarter circle.

IMG_8323
Unfold, and you should have a circle that is the same size as your rug.

IMG_8326
Then, wash your rug. Lay it out on the drop cloth and sew it in place.

Ta-da! Tye-dye rug. Kind of. What do you think? I'm still not too sure but atleast it protects our carpet from Eliza's mess.
